Looking at the inside rear panels and other little jobs.

September 23rd 2019

Vinyl peeling at the corners.

I had a bit of time to spare this afternoon so I decided to take a closer look at the inside rear panels on either side of the back seat. The red vinyl was starting to peel back at the corners so I undid all the securing screws and removed one of the panels to take a closer look.

It was just a simple case of the vinyl coming unbonded from the backing card over the years so I thought a little Evo-stik would hold it down nicely. I cleaned up both surfaces, spread the glue and gave it 5 minutes to become tacky before stretching and sticking the corner back down.

Sticking the vinyl onto the backing board.

This held very nicely and I was about to continue all the way around, but then I noticed that the vinyl had also come unstuck right across the centre of the panel too. This made the panel look quite baggy and untidy so I decided to leave the rest of this job until I get myself a can of spray adhesive. That will allow me to cover the larger areas in the centre before I continue to work around the edges with Evo-stik.

Oiling the filter mesh.

Once I had refitted the side panel, I checked on the air cleaner which I had left drying after its paraffin bath. As it had now dried sufficiently it was time to give the wire mesh a nice coating of engine oil using my oil can.

I allowed plenty of oil to soak in all the way around the filter mesh and then left it on an old cloth so any excess oil can drain out. Once this has happened it will be ready for refitting to the car.

Greasing the prop shaft.

The last job of the day was to grease the joints at both ends of the prop shaft. This may not have been done for a number of years so it's a good idea to do this while the car is up on axle stands.

3 or 4 good pumps of the grease gun saw the grease oozing out of the joints which should keep them happy for many more miles!
